For pedestrian
improvements in Pioneer Square, new ADA curb ramps at several intersections
required areaways rehabilitation and strengthening. Due to historic
significance, Pioneer Square Preservation Board review and approval was
obtained for the ramp support design and preserving brick arches, brick or
stone street wall, brick or stone building wall and columns. New concrete slabs
were designed to be supported on new concrete columns and footings, and the
slab thickness set such that the sidewalk surface can be shaped to represent
the curb ramp slope and wings.
