Hazard Mitigation, Pioneer Square Areaways, Seattle, WA
This is a unique project that addresses the deterioration in the structural condition of the structural retaining walls that support the street and the structural sidewalk in historic Pioneer Square district of Seattle. The design included a street retaining wall supported on helical micropiles and filling the void space with light weight engineered fill. Existing and new utilities like street light pole, sewer lines, gas pipes, domestic water and fire sprinkler service has to be relocated in this project. Chudgar has developed the rehabilitation necessary to ensure public safety, preservation of historic features, safeguard of utilities like sewer lines, water service, electrical utilities, gas lines, and communication cables, minimum disruption to the tenants and property owners, and efficient utilization of capital funds. Proper coordination among the utility agencies, property owners and City of Seattle agencies had to be arranged to get the concurrence of the stakeholders.
