Areaway Preservation

For pedestrian improvements in Pioneer Square, new ADA curb ramps at several intersections required areaway rehabilitation and strengthening. Due to their historic significance, Pioneer Square Preservation Board review and approval was obtained for the ramp support design — preserving brick arches, brick and stone street walls, building walls, and columns. New concrete slabs were designed to be supported on new concrete columns and footings, with slab thickness set so the sidewalk surface could be shaped to match the curb ramp slope and wings.
